5 MINS WITH THE URBANE PROPERTY STYLIST

With a reputation for her attention to detail, strong work ethic and passion for creating beautiful spaces we asked the lovely Emma Tobin, Director at The Urbane Property Stylist to share 5 minutes of her time with us.

Describe your style in 3 words?

Urbane, serene, adaptable.

When & what made you start The Urbane Property Stylist?

I might not have known it at the time, but looking back I’ve always had a knack for seeing the possibilities of what ‘could be’ as a result of thoughtful design and styling. After attaining a degree in Interior Design, I worked in both Interior Design and Landscape Architecture roles.

When I discovered property styling upon moving to Melbourne, I immediately realised I’d found my niche.

Being a property stylist allows me to be creative on a daily basis. Being able to live out my creative vision without months spent in front of a computer is refreshing and exciting.

I am lucky to have an incredible and supportive husband that gave me the push I needed to head out on my own. It was very scary and it has been tremendous hard work, but my business is almost two years old now and I have not looked back.

What are your top style tips to make a space feel inviting, unique and inspiring?

#1 Greenery. Not only indoors, but outdoors as well. If your space doesn’t have a leafy/green outlook, add some potted lush small trees to your balcony or courtyard. It will enhance your interior immediately.

#2 Artwork. Invest in a special piece that represents your personality, but will also work with your evolving interior style long term.

#3 Choose mindfully. Every piece in your home must have a purpose. If it does not serve you practically, it must be beautiful or special and therefore worthy of a place. Be selective with your purchases and only have pieces that you love and will not just be thrown out with the next trend change.

What’s the one piece of advice you would tell your younger self?

I think we’re brought up with this toxic view of failure, when really failure is often the precursor to success. So, my advice would be, “Don’t be afraid of failure”. When you are young you have more time up your sleeve to make mistakes and bounce back easily. I often wish I had started this business years before I did, but the fear of failure was always present.

What’s your favourite part of any project?

Seeing the reaction of the client when they see the transformation of their property.

I’m a perfectionist and I will often not feel 100% happy with my work. Seeing the joy and excitement of the client when they see the completed styling brings a huge smile to my face.

If you could style anyone’s home, who’s would it be?

A close friend. Friends are always saying that they wish I could come and style their home. It would be a lot of fun to do one!

What’s your go-to rug?

Hunter in Denim Grey. Its versatility makes it a staple in our warehouse. We have a lot of light grey sofas and Hunter is the perfect contrast and base for so many of our pieces.

Any key pieces, trends or colour palettes you are loving at the moment?

A colour palette that I always love and finds its way into almost all of my projects is calming blues, greens and greys. It’s a palette I have in my own home and I never tire of it. It’s so relaxed... and who doesn’t want to feel relaxed in their home?!

What’s your biggest design no-no?

Over styling. When a space doesn’t look quite right, nine times out of ten the solution is pulling back on accessories and a bit of rearranging of what is left.

What couldn’t you do without when creating a space?

Artwork. A space never feels complete until there is art hanging on the walls. It really ties a room together.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

The ability to move items from one location to another with the click of my fingers.

What’s on your design wish list at the moment?

Jai Vasicek artwork from his Henna Series. They are divine and I have a spot at home already picked out.

Who do you instagram stalk for style inspiration?

The Bower Byron Bay. I had to book a weekend in one of their suites last year to see the styling in person. I love their relaxed, luxurious style. The palette is timeless and I take a lot of inspiration from their use of texture, layering and minimal use of colour.
